Current Club Sessions
From start of September to end of May bank holiday, the Monday evening club sessions will be in Penrith Leisure Centre pool,
The 1st session is from 8 to 8.40pm and is for beginners or people learning to play canoe polo. The small pool is then available for a further 20 mins for learning to roll or for practising ball skills. The main pool is for learning more canoe polo specific skills.
The 2nd session starts at 8.20pm with warm up ball skills/ discussing aim of the main session, in the small pool. At 8.40pm, move into the main pool till 9.20pm. This session is aimed at people moving towards playing for club teams. (intermediate)
The 3rd session is aimed at team players and starts with warm up ball skills in small pool at 9pm. Then the main pool from 9.20pm to 10pm.
All equipment is provided. You just need shorts, shirt and possible wetsuit shoes as the kayak footrests aren't that comfortable. If you bring your own equipment, it should be polo legal.
Each session costs £8. If you come regularly, you can get this cheaper by paying by direct debit (£20 per month which includes the membership fee). See treasurer (Jonathan) for details. After 3 introductory sessions, you need to join the club, to be covered by BC insurance.
Mon evening club canoe polo sessions at Ullswater Yacht Club from start of June through till end of August:
6.30 till 8pm is for people from the 2nd & 3rd sessions at the pool. Get down earlier if you can and set up the goals (now got wheels on them so you can set up single handed) & pitch (or at least put the buoys out ready) & rubber launch mats.
8pm to 9pm is for people from the first session at the pool ie you are coming at exactly the same time. Please help clear away kit at end.
All the equipment is down at UYC. There are some canoe cags to borrow. Bring warmer clothes than you would at the pool. A wetsuit is a good idea if you think you will capsize. There are changing rooms and showers.
Thurs evening Canoe Polo sessions (@UYC):-
These are team training sessions for fitness and team tactics. All are welcome, but they are not coached sessions, so it is assumed you can look after yourself ie roll if capsized.
These are included in your monthly direct debit payment as we pay an anual fee & don't pay extra for 2 evenings per week. We will sometimes invite other clubs to train against.
These Thurs evening sessions will continue through to October, when light fades and it gets too cold. However, at start of september, the boats and paddles will move back to the pool, so you need to organise your own.
If you want to canoe at UYC on other days, you need to join UYC.
What do I need?
The club provides all the kit you will need to take part. You will need to bring clothes you do not mind getting wet in like; t-shirt, shorts, swimming trunks or sports top. The club has the following kit that you can use in any of the club sessions:
- Nomad Polo polo kayaks in various sizes (indoor pool use only)
- DB Exclusive polo kayaks in various sizes (indoor pool use only)
- Streamlyte paddles (canoe polo legal)
- Lomo spraydecks
- Peak boyancy aids (canoe polo legal)
- Peak helmets and faceguards
- Various canoe cags to use as a wind proof.
Due to safety regulations, you can't use your own equipment in any of the pool or lake polo sessions, unless it meets BC polo regulations.
