Penrith women’s team got off to a great start at their first league tournament of the season on Sat 14th January. The team of five worked tirelessly together through four games against teams from Manchester, Liverpool, Lancaster Red Rose and Sheffield Hallam. With the first game against Lancaster Red Rose, Lucy Mather quickly scored two goals in the first few minutes, with the assist and support of Caitlin Fox. With Lancaster making a quick comeback the team refocused and Hilary Clarke scored two further goals to finish their first match 4-2. With this brilliant start behind them, the team progressed to an 8-1 victory over Sheffield Hallam, goals scored by every member of the team: Lucy Mather (3); Hilary Clarke (2); Clare Farley (1); Jenny Mather (1); Caitlin Fox (1). The third game proved a more challenging match against Liverpool Ladies, with a very close final few minutes resulting in a 3-4 loss for the Penrith team. They brought it back, however, with a 4-2 victory over Manchester Ladies, which ended a well fought tournament to start their league for this year. The team trains every Monday with Penrith Canoe Club, who provide development opportunities for all levels of paddling ability and are becoming more popular with each session, especially amongst younger paddlers.
